Why do you do what you do? Was there a transformative moment that solidified your career choice, your org’s success, or your commitment to storytelling?
I founded UnchainedTV after more than 30 years in mainstream TV news as an anchor and reporter. I worked at WCBS-TV in New York, KCAL-TV in Los Angeles and hosted my own nightly TV news show on HLN/CNN Headline News. But, I eventually realized that I had to devote myself to the most underreported crime of all, namely what is happening to animals who are just like our dogs and cats but have the misfortune of having been born as farmed animals. I’m talking about cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, lambs and goats.
What is happening to the 90 billion animals trapped in animal factories right now is morally reprehensible. Pigs kept in crates the size of their bodies, never able to turn around or even scratch themselves, mother cows brutally separated from their babies immediately after birth so we can drink their milk, virtually all male chicks ground up alive moments after birth because the egg industry has no use for them. The list of horrors is long and almost completely ignored by advertiser-based mainstream media.
We will look back on industrialized animal agriculture with horror and shame. Yet, it is normalized. UnchainedTV offers healthy, sustainable, delicious alternatives with our award-winning cooking and reality TV shows. We also stream documentaries that expose the connection between animal agriculture and climate change. We explain why we cannot solve the growing climate crisis without a transition to a global plant-based food system. And, then there’s the health issue. We let people know that processed meat is a level 1 carcinogen and red meat is a likely carcinogen, that heart disease – America’s leading killer – is connected to arterial plaque buildup that comes from cholesterol that does not exist in plant foods, only in animal products. So, for human health, the environment and the animals, it’s clear that a switch to plant-based is the sane, sustainable and compassionate answer to so many of the problems in the world. Since mainstream media ignores this subject entirely, I knew I had to use my skills as a TV journalist to get the word out. Hence, UnchainedTV.
Tell us about your Telly Award winning piece. What’s the story behind it?
UnchainedTV was proud to win 19 Telly Awards in 2026. Our popular vegan cooking show New Day New Chef Lite led the pack with Gold Telly Awards. Kale Krew, our vegan travel series, followed up with Silver Telly Awards, as did our comedic reality series Green Goddesses Take New York, which featured two actresses/activists who strip down, get body painted as endangered fish and then take to the streets of New York? What could go wrong? It’s fun and outrageous but that’s how we get people to watch. We can’t just lecture people. We have to entertain as we expose them to crucial information about food, health and sustainability. Finally, our podcast, UnchainedTV’s Truth Files with Jane Velez-Mitchell won a Bronze Telly Award. That podcast covers breaking news about the food system that is generally overlooked by mainstream media.
Can you share a behind the scenes story or fun fact about the making of your piece?
The two actresses who star in Green Goddesses Take New York are – in fact – also animal rights activists who often do outrageous street activism in Manhattan’s Union Square Park, Grand Central Station and other iconic locations. They’ve gotten almost naked, except for metal breast cups, to illustrate the plight of mother cows whose milk is stolen by humans. One of them, Jamie Logan, got global media attention for disrupting New York Fashion Week by jumping on the runway with an anti-leather poster during a key fashion show attended by Vogue’s then Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour and superstar Jennifer Lopez, who were seated in the front row.
What was your biggest challenge during production and how did you solve it?
We wanted to capture what these two women go through on a day of animal activism from the moment they wake up until the moment they wrap up their action. Since it would have been inconvenient and awkward for us to have our main videographer, the amazing Jordan Ehrlich of CaveLight Films, in their bedrooms, each woman used a DJI Osmo Pocket 3 camera to film themselves. It worked well and showed the raw reality of waking up knowing you’re about to do something really uncomfortable, but necessary, to expose the plight of animals.
What are you most proud of about this piece? What is the most memorable response you got from this work?
People really loved Green Goddesses Take New York because it was funny and real. One of the stars broached a subject that rarely gets mentioned on television (except for commercials) namely a woman’s time of month. It was her time of month and she was feeling weird about what could happen while wearing only body paint and a skimpy nude-colored leotard. This wasn’t the point of the story but it was so relatable for women that they connected with her and other aspects of the plot, which involved speaking up for endangered sea life. Due in large part to overfishing and the pollution from massive animal factories, our oceans are in peril. It’s a very serious and important issue. Through comedy, we were able to get the public’s attention on it.
You won a Telly Award for this piece. Why is recognition important for you, your team or your work?
It’s important for UnchainedTV to get recognition from mainstream awards shows because we are trying to break through to the mainstream to wake people up about issues that are crucial to their survival. I am a huge fan of the film Don’t Look Up, where the giant comet headed towards earth is a metaphor for climate change. As the lead characters beg the news anchors to pay attention to the approaching apocalypse, they are scolded for being too strident. It doesn’t end well. Neither will this unless we wake up.
Tell us what you’re up to! If there’s a new project, launch, or milestone you’d like us to celebrate with you, let us know, and we might share it with our community.
We have a new reality show featuring vegan bodybuilder/attorney Shaka Smith called Shaka Does Mr. Charlie’s in which Shaka takes over the Brentwood, California Mr. Charlie’s franchise. Known as the vegan McDonald’s, the plant-based fast food joint is a hip, plant-based alternative to the fast food craze.
