Tell us about your Telly Award winning piece. What’s the story behind it?
This is a story about an Opportunity Enterprises client, Darryl Floyd and his family. Darryl lived a very sheltered life for most of his life. He was protected from the world by his parents until the day came that that could no longer continue. At the age of 56 we was introduced to new possibilities and a life that could be his own when entering into Opportunity Enterprises. This documentary tells the story of how a man with special needs was able to begin a new life at the age of nearly 60 and experience the freedom to make his own choices while receiving the support he needs.
What are you most proud of about this piece? What was your biggest challenge during production and how did you solve it?
I am most proud that it highlighted the peace of mind and partnership that O.E. brings to all their clients and especially their families. The video helped raise over $130k in a single night, which goes to help run Opportunity Enterprises. The biggest challenge is always in post production. Making sure that you are able to take hours of footage and pick the right scenes and pieces to make it fit into a little over 6 minutes.
Do you have any advice to other filmmakers based on your career or your team’s approach to work?
Spend the time getting to know your client and those that are going to be featured in the story. Then ask God how He sees them and help guide your path in telling their story.
Can you share a behind the scenes story or fun fact about the making of your piece?
This was the third year that I have produced these videos for Opportunity Enterprise for their yearly Gala event. It is always fun to meet their client that we will be spotlighting for the video. Darryl is so social and friendly and was a blast to work with. He is incredibly fast and so I had to be on my toes when trying to follow him around getting b-roll.
Tell us about the most memorable response you got from this work.
Tears on the faces of the audience and then them giving to O.E. that night after the video. The only other response that I received that was just as good if not better was from Darryl’s family and sharing how much they loved the video and how moved they were. Knowing that I was able to honor them and Darryl with how we told his story is the best response I can get.
