Tell us about your Telly Award winning piece. What’s the story behind it?

This commercial is one of a few TV and radio spots I recorded that were attempting to gain public approval Nippon Steel’s proposed purchase of US Steel–a purchase that ultimately went forward.

What are you most proud of about this piece? What was your biggest challenge during production and how did you solve it?

I really proud to have voiced a campaign focusing on an industry dominated by men. I love using the tough, gritty, authoritative side of my voice and I think it helped this campaign stand out in the eyes and ears of the audience.

Do you have any advice to other filmmakers based on your career or your team’s approach to work?

As a voice actor, I would say give us as much information as possible. If you have any sense of the mood you’re trying to create, the intention behind the piece, how you would like your audience to feel, etc. then let the voice actor know. This helps us serve you. We are in the business of communication and that communication is important from day 1. Also, please don’t forget your voice talent after the work is done. If possible, share the finished piece with us and please credit us when you post your work on Linkedin and other platforms. I can’t understate how meaningful that is to us!

Can you share a behind the scenes story or fun fact about the making of your piece?

One of the most gratifying part of voicing this campaign was that the creators were pretty convinced that they were going to use a male voice to narrate it. However, they opened up the audition to females as well and my read won them over! Another wonderful and hilarious coincidence was that– only after I was hired–did we discover that I had coincidental connections with both the producer and writer of the spots. I went to high school with the producer’s husband and the writer lives about 10 minutes away from me in Boulder, CO! We had no idea this was the case until a plane few by during our first directed session…and we could hear it fly by both in my recording studio and in the writer’s home office! We both said “wait a minute…where are you right now???”

Tell us about the most memorable response you got from this work.

Convincing the clients to go with a female voice actor when they had a male voice in mind was pretty memorable! But also, I gained a friend in this process. After the writer and I discovered we lived in the same town, we scheduled a meet-up at a local pub and have become fast friends.
