Tell us about your Telly Award winning piece. What’s the story behind it?
Sacrificed; Trading Art for War! Is a story about a true American Patriot who gave up his dream and bright future in the world of art when Uncle Sam came calling for him to report for duty.
What are you most proud of about this piece? What was your biggest challenge during production and how did you solve it?
The biggest challenge of this film was the editing/post. The Main character (my father, James), has a quiet and raspy voice and sound became quite the challenge in post. Plus, this originally being my “first film”, my inexperience didn’t help with the original capture of the sound recording.
Do you have any advice to other filmmakers based on your career or your team’s approach to work?
Every story has weight, you as the filmmaker, are tasked with finding it and bringing it to the world, be careful and respectful.
Can you share a behind the scenes story or fun fact about the making of your piece?
When I first started shooting STAW, i discovered my mother was in the midst of going through kidney failure and had to stop everything to tend to her. With having a deadline, I had to pivot and shoot a different film which ended up winning a Telly Award first, in the 45th awards show, Midwest Ice Age! I then returned to the STAW project once my mother had been stabilized to finish it.
Tell us about the most memorable response you got from this work.
My father felt like a superstar when he won in the “best on-screen talent (non-acting)” category. He just lit up for the recognition he has waited his whole life to see for his artwork. It was well-deserved for his self-taught talents.
