I’m the sound designer of my own studio, Foxter Sound, which I founded back in 2011. My specialty in sound design is soundscape and texture. The mood of a video can be shaped by how a soundscape narrates the story, and it is important to create sound textures that serve as details throughout the narration.

Monsoon Blue is an animated short that follows a young girl running a pet shop as she embarks on a journey to discover her life’s true purpose. Through her poignant interactions with goldfish—once vibrant and full of life but now transformed—she begins to unravel their hidden past. As the girl uncovers the goldfish’s original form, she experiences a profound revelation, ultimately finding her own motivation and connection to a forgotten dream. This visually stunning tale intertwines themes of identity and transformation, capturing the essence of rediscovery in a world where memories flow like water.
What are you most proud of about this piece? What was your biggest challenge during production and how did you solve it?
We need to differentiate between the perspectives of the goldfish and the main female character, despite their shared location and similar camera angles. Shifting ambient soundscapes would feel odd, so we decided the goldfish’s perspective would feature a child humming in the background. This builds a sense of horror in the scene where goldfish rush toward the drain, symbolizing young lives going to waste, like goldfish dying in a pet shop and being discarded.
Do you have any advice to other filmmakers based on your career or your team’s approach to work?
I believe the focus should be on storytelling and the narrative itself, regardless of individual positions. Every element contributes to the overall picture. Sometimes, bringing together exceptional talents may not create harmony; there needs to be a balance where some aspects are weaker to highlight the strengths. This dynamic interplay enhances the entire experience.

This short animation project was created in a single location while our team worked from different countries around the world during the pandemic. We submitted the project for the 60th Taipei Golden Horse Award the following year. The day we met at the ceremony was the first time the team gathered in person. Remarkably, during this memorable occasion, we won the Golden Horse Award for Best Animated Short Film—our first win together.
