Tell us about your Telly Award winning piece. What’s the story behind it?
Essential Tremor (ET) is a progressive neurological disorder often mistaken for Parkinson’s, but with distinct features. For many, it becomes severely disabling, interfering with basic tasks like eating or self-care.
Our program explores the century-long evolution of ET treatment, from early brain experiments to today’s advanced MRI-guided ultrasound and deep brain stimulation. While these procedures are highly effective, details about their safety, application, and availability are less familiar in broader clinical practice and among patients. The program features insights from experts at leading institutions, including in Spain, illustrating how these treatments work and how they have advanced over time.
What are you most proud of about this piece? What was your biggest challenge during production and how did you solve it?
What made this series so fascinating, and rewarding to produce, was the blend of history and international perspective it brought to light. One major challenge was the scarcity of early medical images which required us to reach out to multiple sources for access. We also needed to visually explain the pathophysiology of Essential Tremor, which we solved by creating a custom medical animation. With the collaboration of a neurologist and our medical animator, we were able to best ensure precise anatomical detail and a realistic depiction of electrical interference in the brain.
Do you have any advice to other filmmakers based on your career or your team’s approach to work?
Listen carefully and proceed with an open mind. Don’t go in with a preset agenda of how your story is going to unfold. Creative opportunities open up naturally when you’re ready for anything.
Can you share a behind the scenes story or fun fact about the making of your piece?
A fun fact about this program is that all of the featured experts already knew one another. Because this field is so specialized, they had collaborated in some way or were familiar with each other’s work. Although top medical experts frequently cross paths, this particular instance fostered a unique sense of trust and camaraderie that made the production feel special and collegial.
Tell us about the most memorable response you got from this work.
The most memorable responses came from the neurologists and neurosurgeons who participated in the program. After viewing, many reached out to thank us for creating such a strong and thoughtful series. Several institutions even shared the links to it through their PR channels. It was rewarding to receive such positive feedback from our collaborating experts, especially when tackling content with significant scientific complexity.
